    So the news are saying that the unemployment is at the lowest since 1969 (or something).

    I wonder how much of that is simply because a lot of people have given up on trying to find any kind of employment, and thus aren't counted anymore?

    Yes, that is a major factor. It also does not mean that the employment is any good.

    People are working full time and need food stamps to survive. Others can only find part time work, and barely meet the definition of "employed".

    It is also a disparity between people thinking that the economy is doing well, and thinking that they or their family might do well. Some people feel better off being unemployed than having a job that costs them money when you take into account transportation and needing to find a babysitter, etc. National numbers do not fill the refrigerator.

    Part time employment is at unprecedented highs all around the world and in many places has surpassed full time employment.

    In 1969 being employed meant being able to live.

    Nowadays for many means barely being able to survive.

    Yep, those bastards. Although originally my checkings account was from a bank called wachovia, which was swallowed up by wells fargo back in the great recession and I just never got around to jump ship.

    It's not all bad, worst case I'll be losing $20k. It won't be the end of the world...
