You already got promo III, but bagging an alien is still important for progressing the vanilla story.
In other news, what cults / organizations are operating and what have been taken down?

I blew the Black Lotus' avatar (and dynamited their shrine for good measure) and captured a Gillman from the cult of Dagon.

Oh, BTW, I don't think I've got promo III yet.

You're right, looked through the game files it's only very late game promo II

Well, I'm in January, getting to intercept landed UFOs. The aaaaays are playing for keeps. Good. So do I.

Oh, and as an addendum, the soundtrack is very, very enjoyable.

Hell, just for the soundtrack, you have my deep thanks. I really like that genre, and the mod's OST is now on my tablet for enjoyment over the next few years. The mod itself is, in addition, pretty damn good, making X-COM look like a much more dangerous organization than in the original game. When the team lands in a cultist base, it's a bloody slaughter, and before it's over, they're panicking like crazy because the agents are here, like the bloody special forces they are, with P-90 or such, while two .50 machine guns are literally tearing open the building and any cover there might still be.

And then the aliens´ most basic troops arrive and make X-COM know fear. That first mission on a UFO? It reminded me of the movie Stargate, when Ra's warriors are faced the first time by the troopers: you barely see them coming, and they fire with insanely powerful weapons that clearly mean death to anyone hit.

That's good. Very good.

Note to self: when attacking a landed medium alien UFO, psi powers are no match for good old fisticuffs. Cavemen beat astronauts, as long as the cavemen are X-COM's.

Ah, the most glorious part of already glorious remakes. Now I want to play Enemy Unknown again, just to punch enemy mechs.

Suffering by now. How the hell am I supposed to get this promotion?

Actually, I just checked the wiki for this, and basically, I'm fucked now. I have no idea how to get the missions to dismantle a cult, and the aliens are swarming. Yeah, this was a good run, but I'm done with the mod. It kinda pisses me off because there's no clear way to do the stuff and it's appears to be incredibly easy to get stuck in a losing situation even though the mod is otherwise very complete and rich.

Considering the time spent on this single half run with zero indication of how to improve, I cannot honestly decide to go back on it, as it would be an exercise in futility and frustration.

Spoilers if you don't mind
You do an alien autopsy, then research xenobiology, then alien containment. Bag an alien then interrogate him. I think that's how you get promo 3, I don't remember that much.
I do agree that xcf is a nightmare for beginners, because of how obtuse it is. But when you become good at it, it just becomes tedious

Except that I did interrogate an alien months ago. I checked on the Wiki, it requires to actually destroy a cult entirely to get that promotion. In the case of Black Lotus, it requires some psi technology, plus having found and attacked the HQ, etc., things on which I have ZERO control whatsoever.

End result, I get swarmed by aliens without any means whatsoever of doing anything about it. You know how one calls 'nightmare for people who haven't read all the spoilers and tedious for those who have'?

Bad design.

Even the Long War mods are much better designed than this.

I think EXALT is easiest but the fact that it punished you for picking one over the other is kinda dumb. The idea that you're supposed to tackle all of them at once isn't very sound because you only have 5~ scientists at the start, and about max~15 pre promo III. As well as being swarmed with a hundred other missions with only three vans

I've got 40 scientists in my base at half 1998, with some better labs, but even then, the requirements are just dumb, and the situation is even dumber when, you know, the fucking aliens are coming en force and the UN just keeps its stuff from the agency that is capturing some of them for months, has been attacking hybrids, etc. It'd make a shitload more sense for the interceptor and affiliated technologies to be automatically granted once the invasion starts, while the cultist shit could allow the player to have several months of additional prep time if they play their cards well.

This? It's just pissing on the players because they haven't followed the development for a decade and haven't gone through all past versions to see the new stuff. And it's not just me ignoring missions when drowned in them, but at times an entire month going on without one. And of course, how the fuck am I supposed to know I need to focus on ONE cult instead of all four? Because, damn, that would have been a pretty helpful thing to know.

Hey, there is a sequel to xcom files called xpiratez, taking place 600 years after the invasion you lead a gang of mutant pirates. It's...eccentric and very nsfw so I don't think I can even link to it.

I heard about it, it just never interested me. Too silly for my tastes.

OTOH, I'm installing again XCOM 2012 and will probably go for a vanilla run of Enemy Within, then a Long War run. As for XCF, do you know if there's a walkthrough I could grab somewhere, if I ever want to try it again?
