So, since @bluepencil recommended that I have an art request dump thread, I've decided to take up on his advise... and also decided to post my PimpMyGun art as well. If you don't know what PimpMyGun is, then to put it simply it's a (now disused and not updated) flash-based web 'game' that allows you to create all sorts of stuff and firearms if you're creative enough. So if any of you artists are willing, then look through the templates and give me a howler on this thread or via PM. I will be updating this OP a lot to expand on my templates and add new ones, so keep an eye here for template updates.

If you want me to create a gun from 'PimpMyGun', then give me a howler throw the mentioned methods as well and I'll see what I can do.

  • Notes: The search for a 'light' or 'Calvary' tank is a well-known and fraught with disaster, particularly in what was known as 'the West'. The major problem is that most nations wanted something that can at least harass enemy tanks, and that was becoming harder and harder to achieve with things like explosive-reactive, electro-reactive, and composite armors as well as ADS systems and vehicle-born E-War suites. Thus, SolForce changed the mission of the Calvary Tank from 'mini-MBT' -as the various programs kept evolving into- to a heavily armored and armed recon with very limited infantry support capability. With it's four-man crew (clad in light power armor), the tank has gained a reputation for being somewhat cramped. This is mostly due to the fact that there has to be a dedicated electronic warfare officer aboard to manage the electronic warfare suite.

Well, when I was picturing it in my head, the major problem that small size on a vehicle of that weight (the Black Knight is 12 tons, this vehicle just slightly more than double that) is ground pressure, allowing a turret that can accept the elevation capability (given that newer IFVs are having AA-grade gun elevation like the Griffin 3... and they're in the same ball park as the M2) to target higher skyscraper targets (which means 85 degrees), have a respectable ammo load for the autocannon, and fitting the entire AI assembly and the powerplant that is capable of powering that and everything else is going add up. This has to go across multiple types of terrain mind you.
The problem is that at 4.5 meters it is just too wide, and if you're going into streets that will severely limit your options. Tallness is not as much a problem. Length... well, if the turret is unmanned, wouldn't it be allowable for the gun to dip deep into the turret ring anyway?

Powerplant and computing dimensions are largely arbitrary for futuretech. Furthermore, if this is your reason for AI tankery, one might wonder why you're making something so hideously expensive in the first place. If you're not going full Bolo, you're just making something inherently disposable.

Also, don't believe me that newer IFVs are getting AA-grade gun elevations, the Griffin 3 would like to have a word with you (and this is a close development with the US Army mind you):

The Griffin 3 is based on the Ajax, isn't it? Consider - how much of that 28 tons of the Griffin 3 is taken up by having to allocate room to its crew and sufficiently armor said volume? Make everything more compact and you might not necessarily need to be so heavy.

Also, you just posted something that proves a manned tank is just fine, what really does AI tank bring to the table? We're not talking a mini tank here at all, but just a regular tank doing regular tank things. The only differences are high angle fire and lazors. There's nothing there that's very groundbreaking. What's the benefit? More ammo? If ammo's ever a problem in city combat, you are already fucked because you're cut off from your supply lines.

Better reaction time? Point defense should already be largely automatic, and the 40mm main gun doesn't need twitch targeting in infantry support actions. Unless we're talking shit like power-armored jump infantry and ad hoc AA, but still not something that needs fully autonomous AI. It's not like we don't have radar-guided SPAAGs.

A bigger powerplant? For what, 2 laser emitters for defense against ATGMs? If ATGMs are still that dangerous that you need literally laser-quick defenses, the shite are you doing bringing a lightly armored tank to the front instead of a dedicated laser tank armored to MBT levels with multiple layers of NERA plates? Granted, lacking a crew means penetrations are much less disabling. But if you're using powerplant requirements as an excuse, dump the missiles, put in more laser emitters and a mortar. Or at least just have one missile box. Capitalize the shit out of laser technology in the name of Kane

I'd also easily believe a futuretech reason like, say, charging power cells for power armor.


A bigger risk is that AI don't have quite the same judgement cues as a human. In fact, I'd say the hell of a urban combat is the worst place to use an AI because there's so much you could fuck up when responding on automatic. For example: Enemies using civilians as human shields? Tank commander says "Hold fire", tankbot goes "Under attack! Retaliating." and blows the shit out of a bunch of women and children.

If we're talking Tachikoma levels of AI intelligence, as in intelligences that you can converse with, there's still no reason that a bigtank can't have AI and a pilot. What would be vastly more useful in city combat than just another gun with more ammo are drones. Information is all-important. If going around a corner might kill you, why send a meatbag to peek out when your drone controller tank could send a disposable flying microdrone to do it for you? [edit] Also, more laser CIWS makes more sense for drone-zapping duty.

When I pictured it in my mind, the materials used in armor in vehicles can be used in missiles... but you did make a good point on the missiles. The 'Rumbler' is autonomous, although you have made good points on that front too...

... and this is why I want other people in my worldbuilding, to catch logic traps like this.

Another thing I noticed while making this is that because it is unmanned losing the turret doesn't hurt as much. But it has no hull mounted weapons.

Smaller ships have their helipads on the back because they have limited space and lack elevators. This makes it easier to just attach a wire and pull the chopper into the hangar. If you put a gun there at the back, that allows you to answer a stern chase... in exchange for making the ship more top-heavy.

If modeling this I'd put the second main gun turret on center overlooking the landing pad instead.

Even a basic drawn sketch would help. Just a rough hull shape and then circles for where turrets are placed would be a tremendous time saver.

  • Notes: The evolution of the Scimitar 1 used during the Praetorian Invasion, the Scimitar 2 is an evolution of the basic ad-hoc design. Designed to specifically support Xenonaut/Global Defense Initiative infantry in combat, it has become a staple of Xenonaut infantry squads, as each squad usually has one of them. The reason that the Scimitar 2 was chosen over the Hyperion was the fact that at the time of it's design, the alienium and the materials for the Praetorian's armor was only thought to exist outside of Sol (it would be later discovered that Sol had large sources of resources that the Praetorians wanted for their ever-expanding empire, but that was decades away), on the crashing Praetorian invasion force, or what few bases that were still left operational after the conflict. As the Hyperion used more alienium and praetorian alloys than the Scimitar series, it was mothballed until the resources could be found. This weapon system was first unveiled during the Somalia Crisis during the late 1990s/early 2000s when the civil war in Somalia went into fever pitch.
Sidenote: The middle vehicle is what the original Scimitar looked like, note the muzzle break is to limit damage to the lensing systems of the laser cannon:

Just to make sure, unlike the BMP, it's the short barrel that's thicker, right? It's a low pressure gun/launcher?
Similarly, but the thicker gun is a plasma cannon (which uses a graviton or two to keep bolt cohesion over a longer distance, the base defense structure version of the weapon that was basically ad-hoc can target and hit a Praetorian ship up to 80km away) and not a grenade launcher. The thinner gun is a rapid-fire 'MAG' cannon that can use rounds with alienium explosives.

Since they're a mix of decoy, chaff, and flare launchers, basically oversized vehicular countermeasure launchers with a multi-tube rocket launcher?
