Got to admit dont really feel any excitement over this. Wonder if they’ll do all four sequels or just and crash burn at the box office at some point.

Another Avatar 2 trailer. Looks nice, story wise....*shrugs* If I want to see bitch ass graphics I could find a PC that lets me play Crysis. Meh.

Whew! I was worried for a moment that this was a sequel to the Avatar movie by M. Night Shamalamadingdong .

I think it will do alright at the box office, but not break any records.

Way too many people replied to the lacklustre story with "but it so pretty!" last time, and tried to call it an instant classic. Time has shown that it really doesn't stand out all that much in a world where a lot of movies look amazing with their CGI, and where people are starting to get tired of everything being 3D (Covid-19 had a lot of people watching movies on their home TV, computer, or phone, so the money spent on a gimmick was wasted).

I'll probably watch it, but it is more in the way that I like to watch bad movies than how I like to watch good movies. But likely not rewatch, because the last one was so fucking long and irritating that I think I saw it exactly twice, and I expect Cameron to go up his own ass yet again with this one.

That is a misleading title. I expected the other Avatar the one with kung-fu fighting element benders.
I guess this one is ok. Simplistic stories as an excuse to showcase the latest in CGI can be fun.

The way people online are treating this movie is like a goddamn cult. Really not sure if I will bother to see it in a theatre where I will have to wear two pairs of glasses for three hours or just wait for it to stream Disney+.

Well, you can always be an asshole and download it for free, or buy it on a street corner.

Avatar is really hilariously bizarre with how extreme the both sides of its hatedom and fandom.

Because on the other side we have stuff like SB never stopping a beat to hate-discuss the movie to death since 2009, or people on Film Twitter screaming at anyone that suggests that they actually liked the first one.

And then there's:

Oh, and about the movie itself. Honestly I find a lot of the drama sappy and dull, but god damn the action scenes are really good. People often forgot that Cameron is the guy who made Terminator and Aliens.

For me it's not that I forget, it's that I'm just tired of seeing tech demos masquerading as movies. Avatar and Avatar 2 is that, tech demos. The storymaking was incidental to that. Hence why we only get Sigourney Weaver as the star marquee attached to the movie.

Lucky for Cameron Zoey Saldana got some star power herself for Avatar 2 because Sam Worthington didn't make it into Hollywood's A lister like DiCaprio did after Titanic.

I think all the hate is misplaced.
If you think of Avatar as an Anime it is on par with most movies in the genre. And I say most. Spirited away it is not nor is it the Grave of Fireflies, but as a visual spectacle, it is on a similar level.

And this is why I will probably wait until it's out on streaming, Youtube or anything else that doesn't require me to sit for 190 minutes in a theatre with 3D glasses over my regular glasses just to get to the action.

That said, I'm unhappy how further dehumanized the humans are to the point the new RDA characters don't even get to have names, but I'm interested to hear Cameron claim we will finally have evil Na'vi and sympathetic RDA in the third movie.

Good film to watch, story wise better than the first one.
What it lacked is a failure of threat building of Colonel's return - should have had his unit make an enterence by efficiently taking down an insurgent cell. Would build a threat that;s one, and two would nicely explain why Sully was on patrol in and ready to came at the short notice to the abandoned shack. Having him with some other insurgents with him and some extras dying in the ensuing firefight would make a better spectacle and portray the Colonel and hist unit as a credible threat.

Also I see that the nuiscance of RDA's change of mandate went unnnoticed.

Still return to Pandora with main drive engines blazing was somewhat . . . fullfilling ;)

That was the worse part.
The movie wanted you to believe a solar sail(photon sail technically) can double as a re-entry heat shield.
And that is only the beginning of problems with that scene

Well, no. Idea was that you would try to deploy a pod from orbit the same way as you would try to place a container with a helicopter, only with a rocket powered spaceship. Venture Star and it's equivalents are not something that is designed for orbital reentry.
In theory it is possible if you could somehow enter into the atmosphere slowly enough rather than smash into it like a renetry vehicle.
Personally I would went with oversized Daisy Cutter and drop pod with strapped retarding rockets. Given that Cameron likes to play with Vietnam tropes it would fit.

Avatar drew so much hate because Humanity was both the bad guys and they lost in the end.

And that is that.

Nobody really cares about the setup or subtelties.

The concept is anathema to the HFY crowd and that is that.

Nah. I disliked it because beyond being a nice tech demo for some CGI and the 3D fad, the movie was hollow as hell.

Avatar was a plot desert. Also theathrical version lacked cut footage which actually gave a context to the characters, especially first sequences showing Earth and patrol performing BDA on an ambush site, which was too Iraq-ish I think and could raze whole "message".
Also given teh second part's RDA changed mandate it will be hard to gather people to "like" the natives.

I'm 99% certain that is not how atmospheric reentry works.

so an action part got cut but all the smurf village kumbaya stuff got in?

Earth is dying Humans need Pandora.

It is not expended on. So we don't know what Earth is dying of.

Probably chocking on its own shit like 1.

But yea switching from Evil Colonizers Out For Profit to Fuck Its Do Or Die kinda moves this from Black v White to White vs Grey

Not really.
No one on the human side looks all that bothered by Earth dying. All they talked about is I have a deadline to meet.
And that is coming from a whaler character. There is also a marine biologist character that is working on a whaler ship that looks kind of sad that they are killing whales for their brain juice(I am not kidding) to sell back to rich people back home.
And just like the magic rock from the first, the brain juice is magic as well.
