Coronavirus Thread

Fun little US update. By which I mean a horrifying update:

The coronavirus pandemic has left about 299,000 more people dead in the United States than would be expected in a typical year, two-thirds of them from covid-19 and the rest from other causes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

The CDC said the novel coronavirus, which causes covid-19, has taken a disproportionate toll on Latinos and Blacks, as previous analyses have noted. But the CDC also found, surprisingly, that it has struck 25- to 44-year-olds very hard: Their "excess death" rate is up 26.5 percent over previous years, the largest change for any age group.

The new CDC data covers Feb. 1 to Oct. 3. Woolf said the total is likely to reach 400,000 by the end of the year. The numbers were assembled by the National Center for Health Statistics, a unit of the CDC.
The study.

So when they throw about the gut-wrenching numbers of 220,000+... it is actually more like double that, with nearly 180K more to come by the end of the year. So when I estimated 400,000 based off of current statistics I was off. It will be around 600,000 by the end of the year. More, if Trumpy's superspreader events cause the ever-growing rate to spike even further.

this IS the plan kill off the poors and force everyone back to work to make the numbers go up

It's been disproportionately hitting red areas as well. It should be also noted that this second wave is also a new version of the virus, a Corona 2.0 if you will, which muddles things a bit more.

That exact moment you realize that yes the clowns are running the circus and the inmates the asylum

Hopefully, that's not what actually happened. Because I cannot fathom anyone within the White House knowing what a Santa Claus is, or knowing at least that he isn't real.

More seriously, this was inevitable. And this is just the beginning, since nobody is looking at the "why" with a rational mind.

Why do you think that I'm going 'Hobbes is Right' these days?

You realize that I will always turn this into a Calvin and Hobbes comic reference, right?

It explains the USA so well.

A cynical personality and refusal to see the root of problems?

Or is it something else?
Because from what I had read/heard (been watching all sorts of seminars and audiobooks on Hobbes), the current situation is when the irrational have the reins, so to speak, a situation that causes oh so significant problems like we've been seeing. At least, that's my take on the situation.

Back to lockdown for us and Germany. Yay.

Here in South Africa, they've dialed back the lockdown to level 1 (where level 5 is the highest and most extreme) but there have been stories that govt is planning to go back to level 3 in November, or even 5 over the Christmas week.
So far, the president is denying that he has any such intention - mostly in response to popular outrage at the idea.

Well, get out of it quickly. I'm almost beginning to enjoy watching Euros snark at the Yanks for their Covid crisis.

Can't do that if you yourself are down. Besides, I want to see the cartoon hysteria unfold.

So, here in Slovakia we have today and tomorrow the first phase (of two in total) of nation-wide testing. Everybody over 10 yo is supposed to get tested (for free), the testing places are open on Sat and Sun from 0700 to 2130. Who doesn't get tested has to stay home - with some exceptions like going to the closest grocery store or to the doctor, but they cannot go to work. I went and got tested (negative) so for the next week I'm free to go wherever I want. From what I'm reading demand was surprisingly high, half the country went today, even though there was a significant negative campaign around the nation-wide testing in the media. Well, most people need to go to work. The discovered positive cases were under 1%. I guess the other half will go tomorrow. The second phase will be next weekend. If all goes as planned, this should break our pandemic numbers without a hard lockdown.

Meanwhile in Delhi, testing has gone down and cases are shooting up. Positivity is at 10%, and people seem to have stopped caring.

Lockdown is essentially completely lifted except for schools (mostly because nobody had the guts).

Perils of life in the third world. :)

I for one am pretty tired of winning.

To clarify, these are deaths in 2020 compared to average over the same period in 2015-2019, which probably the method least vulnerable to creative statistics or methodological differences one way or another. Although it does not isolate the effect of the pandemic, nor does it involve any special model of expected deaths, it is probably a fair and straightforward way to compare the overall effects of 2020.

Dataset in case someone wants to play in MATLAB or whatever:
Code:

I for one am pretty tired of winning.

To clarify, these are deaths in 2020 compared to average over the same period in 2015-2019, which probably the method least vulnerable to creative statistics or methodological differences one way or another. Although it does not isolate the effect of the pandemic, nor does it involve any special model of expected deaths, it is probably a fair and straightforward way to compare the overall effects of 2020.

Dataset in case someone wants to play in MATLAB or whatever:
Code:

Also, if anyone knows of easily accessible but hopefully reliable data for more countries, I'd appreciate some pointers to it.
The Germans seem to he the only ones handling it properly in Europe. And those guys had a Minister jump in front of a train in terror of this pandemic.

Perhaps we all should have listened to China?

I do not know. I think it's a question of luck at this point.
IMO it's a question of being scared enough :(
Anyway, our all-national testing weekend seems to have been a much bigger success than anybody hoped for. More than 3 million (out of 5 million total, and not all were required to get tested) people came. That's what you get when you know what to blackmail people with. They need to go to work, but without the test they would have to stay at home this week. Kudoz to our prime minister for behaving like a real, ruthless statesman when it's necessary. So far I considered him to be a well-meaning but soft clown.
The rate of positives was around 1%. Some people who tested positive tried to get a second opinion at another testing place instead of immediately going to a quarantine, they're now being investigated for the spreading of a dangerous disease (that's criminal around here). Funny thing, some of them got a negative result the second time.
So, no lockdown for me (and most of the country) this week, then it's off for the second round.

Where are you from?

Also, I contest the fear part. For us, it was more of a matter of logistics and the economy simply not being advanced enough to bear this. Despite people being VERY scared.

In fact, who other than the OECD and China COULD take this problem on? Not everyone has the internet coverage and medical tech you guys have.

@Wakko is from either Slovakia or Slovenia (sorry, I forgot which one is your country, man).
Slovakia. Good memory T-dugong.

For us it was being scared enough in the first wave and observing quarantine and lockdown. As I wrote back then - everybody jumped into the trenches as soon as we had our first case. Who could, kept working from home (like me), many others got childcare money (since schools were closed). Then, since we were very good in the first wave (only 28 dead) people stopped fearing the virus, went on vacations all over the world, stopped taking masks seriously, made big parties etc... and now we're in trouble. If the government hadn't done anything drastic our healthcare system would collapse in the next 2 weeks.

In the first wave for us it wasn't about tech - people who were bad enough to get on ventilation didn't fare any better than everywhere else. It was about sacrificing the economy, closing everything down and giving people money for sitting at home.

Easier to say when you don't have states with population larger than Slovakia, to say nothing for the sheer geographical size and per capita medical personnel. We could not even get teh word out to enough people, let alone doctors.

And we did not have the option of importing enough medical equipment either. We have neither the EU nor China near or calm enough to do that.

I get that man, I can imagine how incredibly difficult it has to be to manage something like India. I was just explaining the situation. In the first wave I was at home from the middle of March until June 1st, together with most of the country. We went shopping for groceries once a week, otherwise life has pracitcally stopped. If I didn't live in my own house with my own piece of private property and couldn't go out to work around it since the middle of April I'd have gone mad from isolation.

Funny thing, some of them got a negative result the second time.
So, no lockdown for me (and most of the country) this week, then it's off for the second round.
Well.

The moment the lockdown in England was lifted, people went to bars, got drunk and in typical English fashion, rioted in the streets.

In Germany, the young were running into abandoned homes and woods for partying.

In France and Spain, they went out doing what they used to do.

Then boom.

Oh well.
