Coronavirus Thread

Of course it is funny. It allows me to check the 'zombie invasion' box on my 2020 bingo card. You're just jealous because your one had 'rain of locusts' instead.
That was our crazy cousins to the west. The swarms were more or less exhausted by the time they trudged to India, and only our western deserts got anything close to bad.
I meanwhile live in Delhi, and we didn't even feel anything.

Edit: dammit, why am I so easily distracted? What I meant to say is that it's still really not funny anymore. Death isn't funny.
Worst, they exploited the death of one of their own to continue their stubborn insanity (which caused aforementioned death) which will lead to MORE death.

We are essentially Russia-lite now
Empty threat, since the US will almost certainly escalate to ridiculous levels over this. Remember how they threatened to invade the Hague if their war criminals are tried there?

The Washington elites respect the UN and other FP considerations as long as it benefits them, and that's it.

They know they can get away with it.

With this mask, the virus won't get through... mainly because Covid-19 doesn't infect people who died from a self-inflicted gunshot from the neck downwards to every single critical organ.

Incel, 💯.

So, uh, production is restarting on The Batman.

Oh. Nevermind.

At least the expanded Fast and Furious franchise is safe.

You know, I think I will stop thinking positively for the future of cinema.

Settra Murica does not follow! Murica Rules!
Maybe it's the ensuring equitable access part of WHO's COVEX plan to distribute based on at-risk populations. That smells like communism, and Murica ain't about that life.
[Forbes] "Equal access to a COVID-19 vaccine is the key to beating the virus and paving the way for recovery from the pandemic," said Stefan Löfven, the prime minister of Sweden. "This cannot be a race with a few winners, and the COVAX Facility is an important part of the solution – making sure all countries can benefit from access to the world's largest portfolio of candidates and fair and equitable distribution of vaccine doses."
There's no side of this decision that's not dumb, but greed is somewhat less so. Or at least a bit more understandable than just knee-jerking based on China.

The dry spell continues:
The government's plan to reopen the resort island of Phuket as a model to welcome back foreign visitors has hit a snag after the country last week saw the first case of local Covid-19 infection in more than three months.
...
Under the Phuket model, floated by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, about 200 visitors from Australia and New Zealand will be allowed in. However, they must first test negative for the virus in their country of origin and stay in quarantine for 14 days at designated places in Phuket.

The visitors can travel throughout the province if they test negative for Covid-19. But if they want to visit other provinces, they will have to stay in quarantine in their respective provinces for another seven days.
Bangkok says no to outsiders for Phuket. The virus will tolerate no joy.

I told you that the Sturgis rally would be newsworthy!

Anyone with a brain could tell that putting on the gigantic Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this year would be a bad idea. Now we have a scientific study to affirm this was a worst-case scenario, an event that appears to be accountable for 250,000 cases of COVID-19 at a public cost of $12 billion.
...
Now, anyone with a bit of sense knew this was going to happen. What's new is that the report gives us a sense of just how bad this really was. According to the study, Sturgis accounted for a 35 percent increase in cases in South Dakota, and raised rates significantly in every county that visitors returned to. Enough that for the month in which Sturgis took place, the rally was responsible for a fifth of the cases in the entire country:
...
The paper concludes that its cost estimate is based on nobody even dying from their positive cases. We know that's overly optimistic, as the first Sturgis-linked death was already reported last week. Even assuming no deaths, though, our country could have saved money by paying everyone arriving at Sturgis $26,000 to turn right back around:

At least they got to see Smash Mouth live for one last time.

At least they got to see Smash Mouth live for one last time.
If this disease had a higher fatality rate, mankind would be screwed.

Seriously, why were cops not arresting the organisers for even thinking about this?!

Well, the US just passed 200,000!

Maybe just 200,000:
The health department's politically appointed communications aides have demanded the right to review and seek changes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's weekly scientific reports charting the progress of the coronavirus pandemic, in what officials characterized as an attempt to intimidate the reports' authors and water down their communications to health professionals.

In some cases, emails from communications aides to CDC Director Robert Redfield and other senior officials openly complained that the agency's reports would undermine President Donald Trump's optimistic messages about the outbreak, according to emails reviewed by POLITICO and three people familiar with the situation.

CDC officials have fought back against the most sweeping changes, but have increasingly agreed to allow the political officials to review the reports and, in a few cases, compromised on the wording, according to three people familiar with the exchanges. The communications aides' efforts to change the language in the CDC's reports have been constant across the summer and continued as recently as Friday afternoon.

Combined with all the other efforts to hide the truth, the true number may never be known. Though we may eventually infer from the number of excess deaths year over year. Despite people not going out and doing things there has been a distinct spike of unattributed deaths, unsurprisingly occurring most often in Republican states.

As for the solution:

It will go away when all the people die and those remaining develop a "herd mentality".

Sooooo... probably another 100,000 deaths before the election, and even if he loses another 100,000 before a sane person can take over. And those are my optimistic projections.

EDIT:

Other parts of the world with poor healthcare may yet overtake the US in total deaths. Though most of those places are actually trying and failing instead of actively making things worse and creating situations where more will die.

Oh, don't worry. We do not have even the slightest chance against this thing. It may actually have killed a million here, for all we know (we do not, because we don't have the logistics to test everywhere at once).

At least we have everyone wearing masks, if only in fear of police punishment. My aunt, uncle, and a cousin have already got it. Same for my neighbour and his wife. No deaths, but it ain't pleasant.

Ah, Trump got a Nobel in medical education. The Ig Nobel, to be precise, for his demonstration that political leaders can kill more than doctors.

MEDICAL EDUCATION PRIZE [BRAZIL, UK, INDIA, MEXICO, BELARUS, USA, TURKEY, RUSSIA, TURKMENISTAN]
Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, Narendra Modi of India, Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, Donald Trump of the USA, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow of Turkmenistan, for using the Covid-19 viral pandemic to teach the world that politicians can have a more immediate effect on life and death than scientists and doctors can.
REFERENCE: Numerous news reports.
NOTE: This is the second Ig Nobel Prize awarded to Alexander Lukashenko. In the year 2013, the Ig Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Alexander Lukashenko, for making it illegal to applaud in public, AND to the Belarus State Police, for arresting a one-armed man for applauding.

Cool. Our Glorious Supreme Eternal Leader got a prize befitting his achievements.
It will surely get him a properly befitting response in the next polls, assuming there are no flower garlands over his portrait.
