Dune: Who is taking care of Caladan ??

Ok, in the Story, as we all know, House Atreides accepted the order of the Emperor and moved to Dune.
Now, the question here is, does the Atreides completely abandon their Ancestral Home or do they leave it in the hand of some custodian or some kind of manager ??

It went under the temporary governorship of Count Hasimir Fenring pending the Emperor giving long-term control to some other nob.

That didn't actually happen, because Paul became the new emperor and took back the planet for himself. Even though he only went back there once so far as the books are concerned. Lady Jessica stayed there for most of the rest of her life, so maybe she was in charge. Paul would have been kind of busy to do direct oversight.

Caladan didn't really feature prominently ever again in the series.

Ironically, we keep going back to Giedi Prime, or Gammu by the time of the Scattering.

Always found it odd the emperor could move noble families like that. A families power would be rooted with the land and the people on it in mutual bonds and uprooting them and just moving them wholesale to new fiefdoms wrecks everything... like we see with the Atreides who got moved to Arrakis then ganked hard before they could actually dig in. No noble house should willingly let themselves be unseated like that because it risks situations just like that. Hell I very much doubt many other houses did not know the score when the emperors potential rival just dies like that anyway which should have made things dicey for him or his and the Harkonnen as well. If Paul had not came back and usurped the throne a rebellion might have been inevitable anyway as houses realized that if the Corrino would do that to the Atreides because of what they might do then what stops them from being murdered to if the emperor decides they to might be a threat?

How are they going to rebel? Guild is in the pocket of the Emperor right up until Paul convinces them to support him or else. The Emperor had all the power because he could use force to control the one source of spice, and then he could trump any house or houses by controlling the Guild with that spice. Right up until that plan no longer worked as he was outmaneuvered.

If the Atreides tried to say no they could be cut off from everything. Landsraad might have been able to force the Emperor's hand if they chose to do so, but the Atreides were a little too perfect for their own good. A lot of houses were looking forward to the Atreides getting fucked over, both out of spite to see the mighty felled and because it would create a vacuum where they could take control.

IIRC was not what allowed the Harkonnen to win, besides the sadukar wearing their colors, was the ocp of tube artillery that they then promptly destroyed as to dangerous to keep around? Yeah weird shit there.

The Emperor powers is not absolute given he did fear the Atreides and has to play politics and shadow plays to stay on top. The spice is essential but he does not directly control having to leave it in the Harkonnans hands which is a dangerous prospect given their antics. If he over played his hand he could have got a increasingly large number of houses angry at him or sensing weakness and at some point they could have turned the guild if it saw a chance to escape his control. Things just never got that far because they did not ensure they got all the Atreides and the heir turned out to be a chosen one pushed into his destiny.

Well, they did call it a tripod power structure. The Landsraad, Spacing Guild and the Emperor balanced each other. The Spacing Guild could block and just seize all shipments of spice or prevent any one from travelling. The Landsraad combined might could face down the Sardaukar even if losses were heavy.

Aside from the Duke's popularity, it was the rumor that he had his small army trained within hair breadth of the Sardaukar that also motivated the Emperor to move against him.

Then of course, there was the Fremen...

House Atreides was given a Morton's Fork, basically. Either relocate to Arrakis or be killed off by the order of the Emperor and the rest of the Landsraad (not all of the houses agreed, but like Leto said, popularity did invite jealousy) or exile in Tupile.

So yeah, the Atreides chose going into a trap instead of certain death or exile.

And to be honest Dune is like the ultimate prize in the setting being the only place to produce Spice.

Even if there were fears of it being a trap outwardly it was a promotion upstairs for House Atreides. House Atreides had a pretty good position but too many factors aligned against them.

As for thr Landsraad if I remember correctly during that era had turned in to a hollow shell with virtually no posibility of actually uniting to face the Emperor and were too busy stabbing each other in the back and sucking up to him.

The guy was well on his way to centralie power until teh Messiah and Arabs! In Space! with Jihad! In Space! ruined his groove
