France in fury as Australia cancels submarine contract; "Stab In The Back" accusations levied

Portugal exported many to PALOP countries.

*shrugs*

I got Sinovac. Hady appointment been a week earlier or later I would've gotten Pfizer instead. Though I'm not sure if it was the EU batch we bought or the US batch they gave through their embassy.

Wonder what made them gave 14 million doses at discounted prices.

It's performance is lower than the mRNA ones, but it beats going unvaccinated by a few orders of magnitude. The NYT article slamming the Chinese vaccine was also a hackjob, which cherry picked it's sources, and data, which was then copied slavishly by the western press.

Nevermind, that they are still the only vaccines that are available to the large majority of people outside of the Golden Billion, as the general west openly told the rest of the planet go back at the end of the bus last year, regarding vaccine IPs, and licensing.

To expand on that, based on the information from the Serbian health authorities administering Covid vaccinations (Serbia being one of the few places with access to nearly all the major vaccine types including Pfizer/Biontech, Sputnik and Sinovac) prior to the Delta spike, the efficacy of the different vaccines was indicated to be between 92-95% effective for each of them regarding demographic groups <65 years of age.

Yeah, Hungarian data from June-July is similar, we used all of them since early this year, so there were a pretty good sampling. Once you got the second shot, death rate was below 0.02% for every vaccine. Yeah, Sputnik and Sinovac was the "worst", but at that point we're arguing about 0.001%.

You see a lot of propaganda reporting that 'our' vaccine is better than theirs...
Nothing new, really.

There's marketing a product as better than its rivals... and there's trying to push to get all rival products banned and one's own one made mandatory for everyone.
Quite a difference.
Still nothing new.

One of the most recent examples is the 5G infrastructure wars.

Here's an interviev with analyst from Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

"Is the Australian arms industry ready?

In the past, our shipyards built Collins-class submarines, but they were not nuclear-powered. We do not have a nuclear industry. Even despite the purchase of reactors in the United States and the acquisition of a shipbuilding project, we are still talking about a giant undertaking that will be new to us. Even Britain, which has experience with nuclear submarines in the order of six decades, took ten years to build the Astute-class. More were delivered every three years. In other words, even for an experienced partner it is a slow process and we are not one of them. I forecast that in our case the deliveries of new submarines will be too slow. Moreover, the new solution will be more expensive than the Attack type.

What does this mean for the Australian Navy?

This means that our current Collins fleet will at some point not only become obsolete, but also worn out enough that it may not be able to go to sea. Second, we will have to double or even triple the number of submarines. We currently have about 750 seamen in this service, and now we will need between two and three thousand. This means that before we receive new ships, a dangerous gap will arise, also in the personell dimension. I am afraid that we will collapse at some point and it will be extremely difficult to get out of this situation."

The previous Aussie PM went out swinging at the deal and said that Australia created a ruckus for nothing and that they could have gotten nuclear submarines from the French which used LEU reactors and would have been a viable upgrade path.

But but... that doesn't give billions to the US/UK, nor create so much tension with China. Can't be done, no sir. /s

Remember, "military grade" means that it goes to the lowest bidder :p

Anyways, the lady is going to spend a decade in some prison and come back to find a ruined career. Which goes on to show that if you're going to be negligent with government contracts, don't get caught.

Governments can get very petty when they are screwed over.

What ruined career? She was discovered litteraly because she was closing to retirement and her replacement in grooming noticed the stuff.

Ha ha ha!

A million dollars for a rich exec is not a big deal. It is also only up to 10 years. The Justice Department is not being petty, but is actually recommending the low end for sentencing.

Spend 18-24 months at a country club, then go home under parole. No more international travel, but another year or so living at home in luxury and then she is free to retire and do whatever she wants in the US.

No more than five years and she is free as free can be (for someone with a criminal record). Retirement barely delayed. After all, it's not like she was arrested for carrying a bag of weed while black, it was only government fraud.

True. But also see how the whole company have been literally only slapped on the fingers given the settlement they have to pay. Of course they probably are f***** in the defense community and everywhere else but it seems that the punishment for undermining military capability of the global hegemon was not severe at all.

On the other hand, when we piece together what is happening with the US national defense, we get a picture of progressive decay of capabilities. They are overextended unproportionally to their ability to support the commitments on the global scale.
Plus of course problems brewing in their own internal backyard.

Yeah, yeah, I hear that every time someone rich is convicted. Usually after hearing about how they would never be convicted and would instead be let off. Which itself comes after people insist that the rich chaps won't be charged at all.

That old? Heh, then let's see if she survives the US Prison system.

You mean a female low-security prison for a couple of years top? No problem whatsoever.

Amusingly, said rich people usually get convicted with... a slap on the hand and are sent to very comfortable prisons. AKA Club Fed.
