USS Bonhomme Richard on fire for over a day and counting

More than 400 sailors are working to put out the massive fire that continues to rage aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego and Navy officials are unclear how long the blaze might continue to burn.

The fire has brought down the amphibious assault ship's forward mast and caused other damage to the ship's superstructure that rises above its flight deck.

"There is a tremendous amount of heat underneath and that's where it's -- it's flashing up -- also forward, closer to the bow again there's a heat source and we're trying to get to that as well," Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3 said at a news conference Monday in San Diego.

Ship's been burning for over a day at pier side. The ship is probably toast.

Word is the ship was in port just after a quarted billion refit, that is 250 mill, so it had minimal crew and maybe many systems including the fire supresssion were down?

Looks like Murphy all the way down.

People on SB were saying it might be an electrical fire.

It must have been one heck of an electrical fire.
Same thing happened on-board one of our SSN last month.

What sparked that one?
No official conclusion yet, most likely human error during the maintenance operations. The sub was going through its refit cycle, so the good news is that all weapons and the nuclear fuel were out, but we have the strict minimum number of SSN for our missions, and that one was the most recent of the previous class, so it's going to be a pain in the ass for our capabilities, even if we don't scrap the sub - this depends on whether the steel warped or not due to the fire.
